Born in the prominent French violin making town of Mirecourt, Paul Bailly studied with some of the greatest French luthiers of his time, including Jules Gaillard, Nicolas François Vuillaume, and his brother J. B. Vuillaume. Following his luthier training, he traveled to England and the United States before returning to France and establishing his own workshop. A skilled, versatile, and prolific maker, Bailly was known for his excellent interpretations of Stradivari models and the powerful but warm sound of his instruments. His works received awards at numerous prestigious competitions including the Paris Exposition of 1878.
