Born in northern France in the mid-19th century, Prosper Colas trained locally before having the opportunity to work in Paris under the prestigious violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. Colas went on to establish his own workshop where he worked alongside Charles Nicolas Bazin, who influenced his later work. Though he was primarily a bowmaker, he collaborated with the Mirecourt workshops of Marc Laberte and Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy to make instruments bearing his label as well.
