Paul Ernst Pilat II - New York, 1937

Paul (II) was born in Budapest, Hungary, and learned violin making from his father, Paul Pilat. He moved to the United States in 1921 and worked for Fredrick Markert in New York. He started his own shop in New York in 1932 and relocated to Los Angeles in 1952. He made more than 350 instruments. He developed his own model but his most prized instruments today are his copies by Nicolo Gagliano, JB Guadagnini, Joseph Guarneri, and Gasparo da Salo. He died in Los Angeles in 1961.
