This instrument, labeled with a facsimile label of Paul Bailly, is most likely one of several that were produced in France and imported to America for fine violin dealer and music publisher Elias Howe Jr. at the end of the 19th century. Howe, cousin to the inventor of the sewing machine and relative of the composer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, started from humble beginnings as a farmhand and fiddler and went on to establish the Elias Howe Company, one of the earliest large American music publishers and instrument producers. As his company grew, Howe began importing, collecting, and dealing fine European violins that were maintained by a team of skilled luthiers.
