The first surviving instruments bearing the J. Lavest label come from his years studying at the Paris Conservatoire. Lavest made many copies of master instruments, particularly those of Guadagnini and occasionally of Guarneri. His instruments are known for their brilliant sound and auburn varnish. Although his shop was in Montluçon, he worked with several workshops in Mirecourt including those of Amédée Dieudonné and bow maker Marc Laberte.
