Ernst Reinhold Schmidt was an apprentice to J. Kretzschman and learned in the workshops of Bausch & Hammig and Riechers before establishing his own workshop in Markneukirchen in 1880. Together with his brother, Schmidt developed the workshop into one of the largest and most prolific German shops of the period. His instruments won Gold Medals at the 1892 competition in Vienna and the 1913 competition in Leipzig. They are characterized by their clear, even, and bright tone.
